Power cut warnings for Great Britain

Early warning of power cuts.

When the grid gets tight, NESO issues official warnings written for power stations and traders. Grid Alert™ checks for them every minute and gives your home one clear status: what they mean, and what to do.

Most days: “Nothing to report.”“Small chance of controlled cuts.”“Charge phones and power banks now.”“Block C is off until 19:30.”

Coming this winter to Android and iPhone.

Free. No account, no location, no tracking.

Grid Alert at All clear: nothing to report, no NESO warnings in force. Grid Alert at Heads-up: small chance of controlled cuts, NESO warning for 17:00 to 19:00. Grid Alert at Get ready: block H off 18:30 to 21:30 today, in 50 minutes. Grid Alert at Power off: block C is off until 19:30, then call 105 if it isn’t back.

How it works

One status for your home.

Colour means what you should do, not how the grid feels. Each level tells you what’s happening, when, and what to do about it.

  1. All clear

    “Nothing to report.”

No NESO warnings that affect households. The grid has the spare capacity it needs. Most days, all winter.

  2. Heads-up

    “Small chance of controlled cuts.”

NESO has warned of a real risk with a time window. Most are stood down. Worth knowing; nothing to do yet.

  3. Get ready

“Charge phones and power banks now.”

Cuts are likely or your block is on a published rota. Short, practical steps while there’s time.

  4. Power off

“Block C is off until 19:30.”

Your block is in a planned rotation. When it should be back, and 105 to call if it isn’t.

Do you know your letter?

It’s printed on your electricity bill.

Every home in Great Britain is in a rota block, shown by a letter on the bill. If rotating power cuts are ever needed, they go block by block. Almost nobody knows theirs.

Add your letter once. Grid Alert tells you if your block is on the rota, when it’s off and when it should be back. The letter stays on your phone.

Wasted wind

The wind is free. The waste is not.

When Scotland’s wind can’t reach England, because the network can’t carry it all south, NESO pays wind farms to stop and pays gas stations further south to start. Grid Alert shows you how much was switched off, and why, each day it matters.

49 GWh
of wind switched off on 30 October 2026, 98% of it in Scotland (Elexon data)
Over £1.5bn
the bill so far in 2026, by Octopus Energy’s Wasted Wind tracker, which counts turning wind down and replacing it. Not affiliated with us.
The Wasted wind card in the app: 49 gigawatt hours of output cut, 98% of it in Scotland, with a chart of each half hour.

Questions

Good to know.

Is Grid Alert from NESO or National Grid?

No. Grid Alert is made by Oceanic Intelligence Ltd, an independent British company. It reads NESO’s and Elexon’s public data and explains it. It isn’t affiliated with NESO, National Grid or any network operator.

Will it warn me before every power cut?

No, and nobody can. Most power cuts are local faults or storm damage that happen without notice. Grid Alert relays the grid’s official warnings early and shows the network operators’ live power cut lists. If your power goes off, call 105, free from any phone in England, Scotland and Wales.

Are power cuts likely this winter?

Unlikely. NESO’s Winter Outlook for 2026/27 expects enough capacity, with the tightest days most likely on weekday evenings in December or January. Most winters nothing happens. Grid Alert is how you’d know if it did.

Where do I find my rota letter?

It’s printed on your electricity bill, usually near your meter details. If you can’t find it, your supplier can tell you. You can use the app without one and add it later.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. Grid Alert is built for Android and iPhone, with the same version on both.

Why does a warning cost nothing when Plus costs £29.99?

Because every warning that needs a household to act should reach everyone. Plus pays for the detail: the full 14-day outlook, routine notices and more places. It never unlocks a warning, even on a tight evening.
